#WickedReads – 5 Times Edison Could Have Used a Break and Shared a KitKat

Happy (day after) Halloween, everyone. Today, we are celebrating Halloween, candy, #wickedreads, and sharing some candy with friends. This week I was invited participate in the #WickedReads campaign being run by Penguin. The book this post is based on is a fantastic middle grade graphic novel by Frank Cammuso titled Edison Beaker Creature Seeker: The Night Door.

Due to the nature of this post, there are going to be some spoilers. I’ll try not to spoil too many huge plot points, but I will be mentioning various events very briefly. Last year I discovered a middle grade graphic novel that stole my heart titled The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O’Neill. When I saw that another fantasy middle grade graphic novel was being published by the same author, I jumped on the chance to read it. Aquicorn Cove by Katie O’Neill is a beautiful graphic novel that talks about family, loss, environmentalism, and is sure to warm your heart.

I knew nothing about this graphic novel when I picked it up at the library. All I knew was that it was a fantasy story and I liked the art when I was flipping through it. That was certainly enough for me, and I’m happy I took a chance on this title. JLA: Riddle of the Beast is written by Alan Grant with art by Michael Wm. I absolutely adored the first volume of Scales & Scoundrels. The second volume has now been released and it has proved just as fantastic as the first. Scales & Scoundrels Vol 2: Treasurehearts is a fantastic high fantasy adventure story that fans of volume 1 are sure to love.

Lumberjanes Vol. 3 follows our favorite cabin of girls at Lumberjanes camp through several short stories. Ghost stories are told. Riley is her usual fun, ridiculous self. And Mal and Molly go on a super cute picnic date.

You know what? There aren’t enough steampunk stories. Doubly so for graphic novels. I mean who doesn’t love cool steam based tech and gorgeous Victorian outfits? Well, thankfully there’s the Lady Mechanika series. Lady Mechanika Vol 4 by Joe Benitez, M.M. Chen, Beth Sotelo, Michael Heisler, and Martin Montiel is a steampunk graphic novel series with detectives, fabulous lady investigators, and some scientists closer to the evil genius side of things than is comfortable.

My husband and I both read Zombie Tramp, a graphic novel by Dan Mendoza. So it was only natural that we pick up Dollface Vol 1 by Dan Mendoza and Bryan Seaton.

Dollface is a new series featuring Lila, a 3-D printed doll which houses the soul of a 17th century witch hunter. Lila is a doll, a soul that occupies a plastic body. She is the result of an experiment done by two MIT students, Emily and Ivan. Now with a second chance at life she can continue the witch hunting work she started so long ago. And, more importantly, find the witch who massacred her family.

Mythology is something I have long been fascinated by, an interest that formed when I was a child and stuck. While I sit on the fence most of the time with retellings of popular fairy tales or legends, I decided to give this one a try. Kill the Minotaur is written by Chris Pasetto and Christain Cantamessa with art by Lukas Ketner and Jean-Francois Beaulieu, and is a unique retelling of the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.
