The Psychology of ZeldaThe Psychology of Zelda, compiled by editor Anthony M. Bean, is a nonfiction novel about the beloved Legend of Zelda series and how psychology is utilized throughout the franchise. Each chapter is a separate article by a different author, many of whom are currently researching different aspects of video games.
The Strange LibraryA small novella, The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami sits neatly in the space between fairy tales, the surreal, and magical realism. It is a short thing, barely 96 pages, with a great deal of artwork. But within that space lies the unknown, the unforgiving, and both the harshness and beauty of the world and people.
Sapphire SmytheShadows by R.J. Furness is the first serialized novel set within the Sapphire Smyth and the Shadow of Five series, which is named after the main character. This is a YA fantasy novel set in the modern day.
Beastars, Vol. 1Beastars is getting an anime adaptation set to release this Autumn, on October 10, 2019. This is the manga which began the series and who’s adaptation will be shortly airing. Currently there are two volumes in print with a third set to release on November 19, 2019. Beastars, Vol. 1 is written and illustrated by Paru Itagaki. She is the daughter of Keisuke Itagaki, known for the manga and anime series Baki the Grappler.
Genkaku Picasso, Vol. 1An interesting manga with amazing artwork, Genkaku Picasso, Vol. 1 by Usumaru Furuya will defy whatever expectations you might have for it. This can be both good and bad. While having an interesting premise, certain aspects fall a bit short in execution. It is currently available to read in full on the Shonen Jump website for a two dollar a month subscription.
A Different TimeA Different Time by Michael K. Hill is a standalone novel that is sure to tug on heartstrings. The novel is set in two time periods – present day and 1989. Each time features a different protagonist. In the present day Keith Nolan finds a home video VHS. On that VHS is a young woman recording a sort of diary – a young woman he finds he can speak to. That young woman is Lindsey Hale. Living with her mother and stepfather, Lindsey is looking for her place in the world, a vocation to follow. In limbo and living with a man she doesn’t like and doesn’t trust, she turns to recording her thoughts on VHS tapes.
The Killing Floor Blues (Daniel Faust #5)Okay, so, let’s admit I need to get my life together. While I have been broken out of my reading rut I can’t get in a review writing mind frame so, I’m a slacker. So, we’re bringing it back to the remaining books of the Daniel Faust series that I’ve read to get me back on track. Also, if you’re a fan of the series we’re approaching a new release on this series sometimes in end of 2019, early 2020.
Reincarnated as a Sword, Vol. 1An isekai light novel with a twist, Reincarnated as a Sword, Vol. 1 by Yuu Tanaka and illustrations by LLO is one of the latest, utterly fantastic releases in the genre. A delight to read from start to finish, Reincarnated as a Sword embraces the best aspects of isekai, video games, and traditional fantasy and combines them into something truly memorable. This particular light novel is part of the growing subgenre of ‘reincarnated as an inanimate object’ with Reincarnated as a Sword being a rather imaginative inclusion.
How Long Till Black History MonthFeaturing a variety of short stories in fantasy and science fiction genres, How Long ’til Black Future Month is a collection for fans of N.K. Jemisin and those new to her work. Previous books by Jemisin include the Hugo Award winning series The Broken Earth, as well as the Inheritance Trilogy and Dreamblood series.
Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 1 Snow White with the Red Hair, Vol. 1 by Sorata Akiduki is a fantasy manga that inspired a two season anime adaptation of the same name. This is the mangaka’s first series, her other work being the series Manual to Teenage Life.
