Double or Nothing (Daniel Faust #7)Okay, book number seven, I’m back and ready to brag about you.
This 7th installment of the series may be one of the best books in the entire series, and yes I know I’ve rated them all four stars and above but, trust me here, this one is amazing.
The Missing SeasonGillian French’s newest novel, The Missing Season, is a novel that straddles several genres—mystery, horror, and thriller. The author is no stranger to the genre, her novel Grit being nominated for an Edgar Award. This novel, too, is a great example of a young adult book that falls within that liminal space between thriller and horror.
Last DaysA frightening tale of cults and the paranormal, Last Days by Adam Nevill is long, suspenseful read in the same documentary-styled vein as Blair Witch and won the 2013 British Fantasy Award for Best Horror Novel.
Komi Can't Communicate, Vol. 1Komi Can’t Communicate, Vol. 1 by Tomohito Oda is a delightful manga that begins on the first day of high school. It’s a story of friendship, teenage awkwardness, and of learning to overcome the fear of communicating with others.
The Psychology of ZeldaThe Psychology of Zelda, compiled by editor Anthony M. Bean, is a nonfiction novel about the beloved Legend of Zelda series and how psychology is utilized throughout the franchise. Each chapter is a separate article by a different author, many of whom are currently researching different aspects of video games.
The Strange LibraryA small novella, The Strange Library by Haruki Murakami sits neatly in the space between fairy tales, the surreal, and magical realism. It is a short thing, barely 96 pages, with a great deal of artwork. But within that space lies the unknown, the unforgiving, and both the harshness and beauty of the world and people.
Sapphire SmytheShadows by R.J. Furness is the first serialized novel set within the Sapphire Smyth and the Shadow of Five series, which is named after the main character. This is a YA fantasy novel set in the modern day.
Beastars, Vol. 1Beastars is getting an anime adaptation set to release this Autumn, on October 10, 2019. This is the manga which began the series and who’s adaptation will be shortly airing. Currently there are two volumes in print with a third set to release on November 19, 2019. Beastars, Vol. 1 is written and illustrated by Paru Itagaki. She is the daughter of Keisuke Itagaki, known for the manga and anime series Baki the Grappler.
Genkaku Picasso, Vol. 1An interesting manga with amazing artwork, Genkaku Picasso, Vol. 1 by Usumaru Furuya will defy whatever expectations you might have for it. This can be both good and bad. While having an interesting premise, certain aspects fall a bit short in execution. It is currently available to read in full on the Shonen Jump website for a two dollar a month subscription.
A Different TimeA Different Time by Michael K. Hill is a standalone novel that is sure to tug on heartstrings. The novel is set in two time periods – present day and 1989. Each time features a different protagonist. In the present day Keith Nolan finds a home video VHS. On that VHS is a young woman recording a sort of diary – a young woman he finds he can speak to. That young woman is Lindsey Hale. Living with her mother and stepfather, Lindsey is looking for her place in the world, a vocation to follow. In limbo and living with a man she doesn’t like and doesn’t trust, she turns to recording her thoughts on VHS tapes.
