Glass Predator (Harmony Black #3)As with any series, the farther into it we go the harder it is to review without spoilers so read at your own risk. I’m trying to avoid them I really am but it’s hard to do that when you want to talk about how great the book is.
Lumberjanes Vol 3: A Terrible PlanLumberjanes never fails to put a smile on my face, and my local library never fails to have another volume to borrow. Lumberjanes Vol. 3 follows our favorite cabin of girls at Lumberjanes camp through several short stories. Ghost stories are told. Riley is her usual fun, ridiculous self. And Mal and Molly go on a super cute picnic date.
Red Knight Falling (Harmony Black #2)Back into the world of Harmony Black we go and I am so ready for it. Just like Harmony and her team are ready to take on the next threat to their world I am ready to read about it.
Skin Folk: StoriesI love short story collections. I also love fantasy. So this week I picked up a copy of Skin Folk: Stories by Nalo Hopkinson over on Hoopla. Despite this collection of short stories winning the World Fantasy Award for Best Collection in 2015, I was not familiar with the author or her other works. I was intrigued, and quickly dived into the book. This is a fantastic collection of stories – mostly fantasy, some horror, and a few stories which were written in a more contemporary style.
Harmony BlackAm I the only one who likes having books read to me? Am I the only one who misses story time on the carpet in school where all of us as kid would gather and sit, cross-legged to look at our teacher, holding a book and reading aloud to us for those precious thirty-minutes or so?
The Gone WorldTelling me there are time travel aspects to a book might be one of the quickest ways to get me to read a book. I’m a sucker for a good time traveling story. And that is certainly a major aspect of The Gone World by Tom Sweterlitsch.
Vampire Hunter D Vol. 1Fun story. I borrowed a copy of Vampire Hunter D from Hoopla. Since Yoshitaka Amano (of Final Fantasy fame) is the artist, something I was aware of earlier, I assumed this was a manga. Not sure why, seeing as Yoshitaka Amano hasn’t illustrated any manga as far as I am aware. (Do correct me if I’m wrong. I’d love to read a manga he’s illustrated.) As it turns out, Vampire Hunter D by Hideyuki Kikuchi is a light novel! I love light novels!
The Strange BirdMy library tends to always have novellas in their new books section, and I tend to always check them out immediately. This past week I found a book called The Strange Bird by Jeff VanderMeer, which is a title I hadn’t heard of before. Once I’d checked the book out and gotten home I realized I was in the middle of two other novels by the same author – Annihilation, the first book in the Southern Reach trilogy, as well as Borne.
The Morose Mononokean Vol 2I have a penchant for reading manga and watching anime about humans that get involved with the affairs of the supernatural, straying into worlds that they don’t really belong. The Morose Mononokean fits into this theme pretty perfectly, and I have been thoroughly enjoying this series which is currently available to read on Crunchyroll. This week I read The Morose Mononokean Vol 2 by Kiri Wazawa.
Radio FreefallI stumbled upon Radio Freefall by Matthew Jarpe at the library recently. It isn’t a new release, I hadn’t been familiar with the author, and I can’t recall ever hearing about the novel. So, naturally, I checked it out immediately, knowing nothing but what the flap copy said – this this was a cyberpunk story with rock and roll, AIs, and technology. And you know what? It was a lot of fun.
