Here’s the thing. If you’re reading a review for book number eight in a series you’re either already hooked (like me) or you’re uncertain about going forward. Either way you’ve made it more than halfway through the series (as it currently stands at 15 books) so, really, are you going to quit on Harry Dresden now? Your choice.
Let me start this review off with stating the obvious. Harry is still a smartass, snarky wizard that makes technology go boom. He still has a big heart that gets him into trouble. And, after the events of the last few books we know that Harry is an unwilling Warden of the White Council.
With all that being said there isn’t too much I can say in this review without giving away a lot of major plot points but I will give hints about who you see a lot of and, if the mention of these characters is enough to draw your interest, maybe you should just go ahead and read this installment of the series.
Among the list of characters we see quite a bit of (and learn about) are the following; Michael Carpenter, Charity Carpenter, Molly Carpenter, Karrin Murphy, Thomas Raith and, essentially, the entire White Council.
If that list above isn’t reason enough let me remind you of one thing. It’s a Harry Dresden novel. That means you either love or hate the style already. It also means you know which characters you care about and that list above has a good chunk of the most loved characters. So, really, the question is, are you ready to hear about their latest mishaps?
Between dark magic in Chicago that is affecting people’s minds (a series offense to the White Council), monsters being summoned that resemble horror movie monsters, a rebellious teenage daughter and the ever present badass female characters that this book has in spades let me say that this adventure is a fun one.
And, as with most of my reviews of books by Jim Butcher about Harry Dresden here is one of my favorite quotes from the book.
“No rest for the wicked, Bob, and that means that we can’t slack off either, or they’ll outwork us.”
Okay, who are you kidding at this rate? Eight books in and you need a review to tell you if you like Harry Dresden and his misadventures? If you’re struggling with the constant back and forth in Harry’s life maybe give the audiobooks a try. They’re read by James Marsters, well known for his appearance as Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Chances are if you’re enjoying these books you’ve at least seen an episode of Buffy and that means you know exactly who I’m talking about. And yes, even with his false British accent gone James Marsters is still very nice to listen to.
